of the World Baseball Classic. GSG had the distinction of managing and creating
all the on field visuals for this unprecedented final game and was selected by
Major League Baseball (MLB) for its excellence in execution. To outfit PETCO
Park in San Diego, GSG worked tirelessly to create the “National Flag” displays,
as well as a huge structural globe emblazoned with the World Baseball Classic
logo that the agency also produced. This logo has been featured prominently in all
marketing materials and activities surrounding this heralded series. During
Monday's final game, the logo was proudly displayed throughout PETCO Park,
including on the pitcher's mound.
The Numbers...
Monday's final game was the climax to a three-week, four-round tournament
featuring teams representing 16 countries. According to MLB, attendance for the
39-game tournament was 737,112 and was covered by 5,354 media outlets
worldwide. The final game drew a sellout crowd of 42,696 at PETCO Park and
was telecast by via TV and radio outlets worldwide.
GSG Designs for WBC...
GSG designed and created the flag display to represent every participating
country. All 16 national flags were displayed using four-frame structures, each
containing four large 20' x 30' flags. These structures were arranged across the
outfield and mid-field and manned. Once in position, the flags were unfurled and
retracted manually and the structures united together. To further enhance the
experience, a 13' diameter globe sat atop a metal frame ring and was lit from the
inside and aglow during the opening ceremony.
Tasked with creating the design, as well as the physical structures themselves,
GSG worked with engineers and architects to ensure their stability and
aesthetically pleasing effect. In addition, flag specialists were consulted to insure
the exact accuracy of the color and designs on each national flag. After final
contracts were signed, legal approval and insurance were authorized, the
timeframe in which GSG had to complete the entire project had dwindled. Despite
the complexities involved and all of the components that GSG had to pull together,
everything for the event was completed in just two and a half weeks.
